Our plant of the week is another fall plant, the Garden Mum (Chrysanthemum morifolium).

This variety of mum is hardy to US zones 5-9 and can be used as a perennials or annuals depending on when and where you plant. Garden mums grow up to 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide. They bloom in the fall, producing bright orange, purple, pink, white, and yellow flowers These mums prefer full sun and well-draining soil. Luckily for us in Louisiana, they love humidity and temperatures around 60° to 70°F. It’s best to water your mums 2-3 times a week and fertilize often in the summer to encourage new growth. If you want your mums to last the winter, consider planting somewhere sheltered from the wind and add mulch for added protection. If you have any questions. Let us know!
