Our plant of the week is the holly! Hollies are evergreen, which is associated with everlasting life and hope. This makes them a popular indoor plant during the Christmas season. There are many types of hollies, including the English holly (used in Christmas decorations), and Louisiana natives like the American holly and the Yaopon holly. Fossilized records show a long history of these plants growing in North America.
The name holly comes from the Old English word “holegn”, which is used to describe thorny plants. As well as having sharp leaves, hollies produce red fruits that are essential winter food for wildlife, but toxic to humans and pets.
