If brown patches in your lawn keep spreading no matter how much you water, it’s probably not drought. It’s possible you have chinch bugs!
Watering will not solve this issue. Chinch bugs insert their needle-like beaks into the grass blade and once it is done feeding, the bugs leave behind a toxin that will kill the grass.
We wanted to show you a quick test for chinch bugs in your own lawn, which takes 10 minutes and costs nothing. You can use a coffee can, just be sure to open both ends. Locate the edge of the damage and push the can a couple inches into the soil. Then fill it with soapy water.
Within 5-10 minutes, chinch bugs will float to the surface. There aren’t any in our video since our lawn doesn’t have chinch bugs, but you would see tiny, blackish bugs floating in the water. A few bugs are treatable. A dozen or more shows they are established in your lawn.
