Looking for a pop of true blue in your landscape? Our plant of the week is Ageratum (Ageratum houstonianum). Also known as flossflower, it’s one of the few plants in the world that naturally produces true blue blooms. Its soft, fuzzy flowers add long-lasting color to flower beds, borders, and containers throughout the season.
Did you know? The name Ageratum comes from Greek words meaning “not aging,” a nod to how well its cut flowers hold their vibrant color. Another fun fact: Ageratum produces a natural compound called coumarin, which mosquitoes dislike. While that doesn’t make the plant a mosquito repellent for your yard, the compound has been used in some commercial insect repellents.
