Happy Monday! Our plant of the week is another Louisiana native plant: Coreopsis (also known as Tickseed). The name Coreopsis comes from the Greek words koris (meaning “bedbug”) and opsis (“view”) because its curved seeds resemble ticks or bugs. These sunny, daisy-like flowers are a favorite food source for bees, butterflies, and seed-loving birds.
Did you know? Native Americans and early settlers historically dried and boiled the plant to brew a warm, coffee-like beverage. Also, if you like flower language, Coreopsis means “always cheerful.”
If you’re looking for a native flower that’s low maintenance, prefers full sun, and is drought tolerant, Coreopsis might be the choice for you!
