There are a lot of plants you don’t need to trim right now, but one you can is roses! This is the more aggressive trim you can do on these plants each year during February. Trim the plant to about ⅓ of its current size, and remove the dead or dying wood on the inside of the plant. By trimming them now, you will be promoting new growth come spring. It’s from this new growth that all of your new blooms will be produced.
You can use any tool you have, from hand pruners to hedge trimmers to make your initial cut. Once you have it cut down to size, use hand pruners to remove the rest of the dead wood on the inside. If you’d rather leave rose pruning to the pros, we’re happy to help. Proper pruning now means healthier roses all year long.
