Our plant of the week is another popular fall annual, the petunia. Petunias are tender annuals native to South America and named after a word for tobacco. In fact, petunias are related to the tobacco plant and they both belong in the nightshade family. They can grow up to 18 inches tall and 4 feet wide, depending on the variety. Adventurous eaters might like to know that the petunia plant is edible and has a mild, peppery flavor and a fruity note. Another fun fact is that petunias were one of the species grown on the International Space Station to see how they would grow in space. Like most fall annuals, petunias prefer full sun and well-draining soil that’s rich in nutrients. Most species will last until spring, although Louisiana Super Plant petunias such as Vista Bubblegum can last the summer and return the next year. Let us know if you have any questions!
