Our Plant of the Week today is Liriope. Liriope is native to the shady forests of China, Japan, and Korea. While it was once thought of as a grass, then a member of the lily family, it’s now considered a part of the Asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
There are two types of liriope we use here: Big Blue liriope (Liriope muscari) and Creeping liriope (Liriope spicata). Big Blue liriope forms clumps, ideal for edging/borders, while Creeping liriope spreads rapidly and works as a good ground cover.
Right now is a good time to trim your liriope plants. Pruning in late winter to remove overgrown or dead foliage is recommended to clean up the plant before new growth begins in spring. Let us know if you have any questions!
