Happy Monday! Our plant of the week is one of our spring annuals, Vinca. There are two main types of vinca: Vinca minor/major: trailing, shade-tolerant, perennial vine with violet flowers. Catharanthus roseus: bushy, heat-loving annual with white, pink, or red blooms. Here in Louisiana, we use Catharanthus roseus as a bedding plant.
The name “vinca” comes from the Latin word vincire, meaning “to bind,” referring to its trailing, vining stems. Did you know? The popular color “periwinkle” is named after the violet/light blue flowers. Also in India, Madagascar periwinkle is known as “Sada Bahar,” which translates to “always blooming”.
