Our plant of the week today is Citronella! This is a type of plant known for its intense lemon aroma that repels mosquitoes. Citronella oil primarily comes from tall citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus), while the popular “mosquito plant” is a scented geranium (Pelargonium citrosum). We treat the Citronella plant (Pelargonium) as a spring annual here and it produces violet, pink, or white flowers. Because it is low in toxicity to non-target insects, it is generally safe for bees and butterflies, yet highly effective against mosquitoes. This means your pollinators will still be safe and happy! Citronella is also used in aromatherapy to reduce stress and boost mood, and historically in folk medicine to help with headaches and fungal infections. Let us know if you have any questions!
